2018 Rivers-Marie Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
Tasting Notes: The wine is concentrated without being heavy or tiresome. The fruit profile is varied, running from red to purple to black with an intense perfume that in younger years had to be pulled out with bottle age. In this vintage, tannins are abundant but ripe and round helped by small additions of most of the single vineyards. A classic example of Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir.
Vintner Notes: "It is all about the site,” says Thomas Rivers Brown. That is the main motivator when it comes to his personal project, Rivers-Marie. Thomas Brown, one of California’s foremost Winemaker/Consultants makes mostly Cabernet based wines for labels such as Shraeder, Outpost and Maybach. Yet, it is his Rivers-Marie label, which he shares with his long-time partner Genevive (who’s middle name is Marie), where Thomas expresses a more delicate and restrained style of winemaking that’s inspired by his true love for traditional Burgundy and Barolo. Brown grew up in South Carolina, and after college, headed west to California. This lead to a job as an assistant winemaker at Turley Winery in 1997, under the tutelage of Ehren Jordan. Three years later, he took over the winemaking at Outpost on Howell Mountain, where he remains as winemaker today. Rivers-Marie was launched in 2002. Today, Rivers-Marie has grown to include several single vineyard sites in and around Occidental including Occidental Ridge, Willow Creek, Silver Eagle, and the Summa Vineyard.
