2016 Keplinger Basilisk Grenache
At the dinner table in Helen Keplinger’s childhood home, the gourmet meals her mother cooked were always accompanied by wine from her father’s cellar. When the last drop was poured, she’d keep the bottle for her collection. No surprise, then, that in 1998, she enrolled at UC Davis to pursue her masters of science in Enology. Since then, she’s worked with a Who’s Who of winemakers in California and beyond – including Heidi Barrett and Michel Rolland – and has been the winemaker for a host of labels, both in Napa Valley and in Priorat, Spain. Her time in Europe, where food and wine are so effortlessly entwined, brought her back to those dinners of her childhood, and inspired a desire to create exceptional, food-friendly wines. As a winemaker, her mantra is “great wine is only possible from great vineyards,” and with the fruit of those premier vineyards, Keplinger crafts small lots of critically acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Grenache and red blends to grace the table today or cellar for celebrations to come.
