2016 James O'Neil Cabernet Sauvignon
Vintner Notes: Sullivan Rutherford Estate was founded in 1972 by James O’Neil Sullivan.
A California native and farmer’s son, James left a thriving career in the
graphic arts to become a visionary and pioneer of Rutherford, where some
of the world’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon is produced. At the heart of the
Napa Valley, the estate he built with his wife JoAnna spans 26 acres of
vineyards and lush gardens, with the family residence at the center.
Today, a small private partnership led by entrepreneur Juan Pablo Torres
Padilla continues to build on the Estate’s legacy of growing and crafting world-
class wines. Born in Mexico City, Juan Pablo learned about wine from his
grandfather, who favored vintages from Bordeaux and Burgundy. As an adult,
he moved to France, marrying and settling down in Paris for 16 years, and
often visiting the regions his grandfather so admired. On a trip to Burgundy
in 2006, he and his uncle hatched a plan to someday own a winery of their
own. More than a decade later, the search led Juan Pablo to Napa and,
eventually, to the storied Sullivan Estate.
“We’re building upon the foundation laid by James O’Neil Sullivan and
the estate he created during his lifetime,” Juan Pablo says. “His deep
commitment to the vineyards and to sophisticated winemaking practices
presents us with tremendous opportunity. We share his values of hard
work, discipline and the pursuit of excellence, and I’m committed to making
this estate one of the best in Rutherford, Napa Valley and the world.”
