2016 David Arthur Proprietary Red
Tasting Notes: Crafted from fruit grown on Napa’s celebrated Pritchard Hill, this dark ruby red blend offers bright fruit aromas of baked cherry, plum and wild strawberry overlaid with subtle baking spices and notes of anise and cola. The palate is plush with fine-grained, polished tannins giving way to a finish of candied plum, tamarind and maraschino cherries.
Vintner Notes: In 1976, David Long’s father disclosed that he had purchased 1000 acres of land in the Napa Valley. Pritchard Hill, where the Long’s bought their parcels, was dotted with cattle ranches at the time. Today, it’s world-famous for wine. Though David began his career as a restauranteur in Boulder, Colorado, the revelation of his family’s Napa property sent him in a new direction. He cleared the land, built a barn and planted vines. He learned about viticulture and oenology through internships at Chappellet, Joseph Phelps and Schramsberg, and took classes at UC Davis. And in 1985, the year his daughter Laura was born, he released his inaugural vintage of David Arthur wine. David and Laura now work side by side in the original barn, sharing the responsibility of running the day-to-day operations of the winery and vineyards. With the help of a talented team, including winemaker Nile Zacherle (previously of Barnett Vineyards and Chateau Montelena), the Longs hand craft exceptional quality, limited-production Cabernet Sauvignon, Red Blends, Rosé and Chardonnay.
