2015 Kenefick Ranch Merlot
Tasting Notes: The unique terroir of Kenefick Ranch is evident in this robust yet elegant Merlot. Notes of cedar add subtle spice to a nose brimming with jammy raspberry and plum, while juicy berry flavors fill the palate and hits of vanilla linger in the finish. Delicious today, this wine can also be cellared for 8 to 12 years.
Vintner's Notes: Dr. Tom Kenefick was a practicing neurosurgeon in San Francisco in the 1970s when he first visited the Napa Valley and fell in love with the area. Eight years later, he found his dream property, a 250-acre ranch tucked in the foothills of the Palisades in Calistoga, where the vines dated to the 1800s and the longtime owner was still farming with a horse-drawn plough. Dr. Kenefick descends from a long line of farmers, so hard work and love of the land are in his genes. As he continued his career in medicine, he spent weekends at the ranch, ploughing, planting, and tending to the vines – he also brought his two children, Caitlin and Chris. Today, the ranch has 125 acres under vine, with a focus on Bordeaux varietals. Consulting winemaker Kent Jarman, who honed his craft at Duckhorn, strives to create wines that capture the remarkable combination of microclimates and soil types the ranch affords.
