2014 Keplinger Mars
Tasting Notes: The ever-evolving aromatics are of bing cherry, red licorice, cardamom, fennel seed, orange blossom, white stones, tar. Fine tannins and savory notes rule the palate – cinnamon stick, earth, tangerine, pewter. There is great tension and contrast between the sweet and savory notes in this wine that never seems to rest its showcase.
Winemaker's Notes: This vineyard makes me feel I’m on the planet Mars – a west-facing slope of rocky red volcanic soil studded with white rhyolite 1400’ above Glen Ellen, perfect for making Grenache, Mourvedre, and Syrah struggle to grow. Heaven. Mars! Oddly enough, these three different varieties, which would normally ripen separately, are in sync and were harvested together on September 15th. They were co-fermented in one tank with 15% whole cluster, spending 28 days on the skins before being drained to a combination of barrels - Demi Muids, 500L, and 228L Burgundian barrels, 30% of which were new. A blend of 38% Grenache, 47% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre, this is an incredibly dynamic and complex wine, and very much a voice of its terroir.
Composition: 47% Syrah, 38% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre
