Mark Perlman
Painter Mark Perlman was born in Pittsburgh and received his MFA from West Virginia University. He has long been a resident of California, where he is currently Professor of Art at Sonoma State University.
Perlman's most recent paintings are a synthesis of painterly abstraction and recognizable objects. The paintings are created in a very complex and lengthy process that begins with building up the surface underpinning over a period of six to eight weeks. Deep washes of color, scratches and scrapes reveal objects that are revealed and yet remain visually elusive. Layers of pigment and wax move from brilliantly colored areas to darker, more monochromatic passages that activate, and at times agitate, the picture plane. In the words of the artist, "these paintings do not illustrate or represent "something"- they struggle to insist on being the thing itself. In the work's direct and austere simplicity, image and ground become silence, atmosphere and presence."
Mark Perlman has exhibited extensively in the United States and abroad, and has been included in important private and public collections, including The Hirschorn Museum and the Minneapolis Museum of Art.
